What is mixing?
Mixing is the stage where separately recorded tracks become one piece of music. The engineer sets levels, places each sound in the stereo field, shapes frequencies and handles dynamics. The goal: the listener hears the song, without noticing the technical work holding it up.
What mixing is for
After recording, you have isolated tracks: a voice, a bass, a drum kit split across several microphones, keyboards. Taken separately they sound fine. Stacked without treatment, they mask each other and the track turns muddy.
Mixing solves that crowding problem. Each element gets its place in level, frequency and depth, so the ear follows what matters at every moment. A good mix keeps the song legible from the first chorus to the last.
The stages of a mix
Level balance. Everything starts with the faders, no effects at all. If the track already holds up at that point, the rest will be quick. If one element needs pushing abnormally loud, the problem usually lies in the arrangement or the take.
Equalisation. We remove what crowds before adding what is missing. Cutting useless low end from a guitar frees room for the bass; a slight dip in a pad clears the vocal.
Dynamics. Compression and automation steady the volume swings, especially on vocals, so no word disappears and none jumps out.
Space. Panning, reverb and delay build depth. This is what separates a stack of tracks from an ensemble that seems to play in one room.
Details and automation. The last few percent happen here: a syllable caught up, a reverb opened on one word, an instrument stepping back at the right moment.
How long a mix takes
A single usually takes one to two weeks, revisions included. An EP or album spreads further, because coherence across tracks becomes work in itself. The heaviest factor is not the track count: it is the quality of the preparation upstream.

Frequently asked
Can I mix my own track?
Yes, and it is a good school. The limit shows mostly on projects meant for release: after weeks on one track, the ear loses objectivity. An outside listener hears in ten minutes what you no longer notice.
Can mixing fix a bad recording?
Partly. We correct an imbalance, background noise, a slightly dull take. We do not recreate a performance that lacks intention. When the source is too degraded, audio restoration takes over.
